While I’ve watched the NHL playoffs this season, one thought keeps rushing through my head about this Anaheim Ducks team, and their so-called “Missing Piece” – Ryan Kesler. Did they take a rookie GM to the cleaners in the deal, or was Jim Benning forced by ownership to make a trade to make Vancouver better in 2014/15, rather than one that would have helped the team for the next decade or so.

While I agree with your thoughts, Annaheim had the leverage in this deal. It's easy for us to armchair quarterback, it's much more difficult to cut a deal in the real world.

Leverage, maybe a little. But you can't tell me Rakell was off the table. he had like 20 games of NHL experience at the time. there is no way the Ducks are saying no to Kesler If Benning wanted Rakell instead of Bonino.
