Welcome to 2-minutes in the box. The blog that tells you want is on my mind in about 400 words or less.
Today’s topic, Alex Burrows of the Vancouver Canucks.
As most people know, Alex Burrows has been a bit of a lightning rod for controversy over his career. Whether he’s diving, playing dirty in scrums, trash-talking, biting fingers, calling out referees or crossing the line against the opposition there’s always something going on with the guy Canucks fans affectionately know as “Burr”.
Now before we get into it, just let me clarify, Alex Burrows has been one of my favourite players in the NHL for a pretty long time. The heart he plays with every shift is the same type of heart every player should play with – And I love that part of his game.
But recently, the crap seems to be piling up. With Tootoo calling him out for comments and more recently O’Sullivan claiming Burrows said to him, “I’m going to hurt you like your father did”.
This type of thing is disgusting and has no place in hockey or society in general. It’s not acceptable in any circumstances and Burrows should be embarrassed by it.
Now, because of this behaviour and number of Canucks fans are hoping the club trades him – it seems being a horse’s ass isn’t tolerated when you’re putting up fourth line scoring numbers.
But, I have news for you Canucks fans, Burrows won’t be going anywhere. Why, BECAUSE NO TEAM IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD TAKE HIM RIGHT NOW!
Why?
Add all that up and no team would be dumb enough to disrupt their locker room by bringing in a guy no one likes, who isn’t doing a lick offensively. And even if by some miracle someone wanted him, Burrows has all the control as to where he goes.
So what should the Canucks do? Ultimately, since I’m 99 per cent sure he’s untradeable, I wait out the season and buy him out.
He’s clearly lost a step and hasn’t been anything close to the player we all remember. Add in that he’s one of the NHL’s most controversial figures, and spending 4.5 million in cap space on him isn’t wise – especially given a guy like Brendan Gaunce, Ronalds Kennins or Alexandre Grenier is more than capable of getting 20-30 points in the NHL. The Canucks will save a bit of cash and the production won’t be a whole lot different.
I say, buy him out Benning, and save about two-million next year in cap space.
Thanks for reading.

But, I have news for you Canucks fans, Burrows won’t be going anywhere. Why, BECAUSE NO TEAM IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD TAKE HIM RIGHT NOW!
Why?
- He has 3 points in his last 20 games
- That puts him on pace for 12 goals and 26 points
- Other team’s players likely hate him
- He makes 4.5 million this year and next
- He has a no trade clause
Add all that up and no team would be dumb enough to disrupt their locker room by bringing in a guy no one likes, who isn’t doing a lick offensively. And even if by some miracle someone wanted him, Burrows has all the control as to where he goes.
